Mistakes, Struggles, and Regrets (2024)

Happy Sunday morning! It looks like another beautiful summer day in Indiana. Technically, it’s still spring, but this is like summer, so I’m advancing the season by a couple of days. Remember, the summer solstice is this week, the year's longest day. Milk it for all you can; after that, the days will get shorter. So, how are you NOW?

We had a great day yesterday. We had a medical appointment in the morning, old people stuff, then walked to meet our friends Duane and Lynn at Tupelo Honey, a restaurant by our house that serves chicken and biscuits. It was amazing. We sat outside. Our friends live in Fishers but ride their tandem bikes to our hood. It was great to catch up. We are blessed with many wonderful friends in both of our communities.

We took our pup for a walk and enjoyed our community; I loaded up a forerunner full of cardboard from Christmas and took it to the recycling spot about 200 yards from our home. We took a nice afternoon nap, and then our teammate and friend Peggy came over, and we all drove up to Spingport to see another teammate, Aaron, and his band, The Smoking Horses; their drummer, a well-known fellow from the Muncie area, has a compound complete with barn, bar, stage. They had a smash burger food truck, which was terrific.

We listened to the band, and my mother and father showed up and hung out; imagine being 83 and driving 30 minutes to see a rock show. My parents are unique, and it’s great to hang out no matter the situation. We left about 8:30, arrived home at 9:30, met some new neighbors, and stayed up a little later than usual, but I slept great and have another banner day planned for today.

We are going with our neighbor Bill to English Ivy for brunch, returning home to meet my parents, daughter, her husband, and the infamous Sunday Jo Lee. Mike, Lindy, and some other friends are coming over, and we will watch the Indianapolis Indians play some baseball. We will take them out to the ballgame and enjoy our youngest granddaughter.

I suspect a lovely, relaxing evening on the deck and a busy first week back. I’ll be heading around catching up with some friends and clients. My birthday is next weekend, and a gaggle of people are coming in, including all four grandbabies. It’s my favorite day of the year. We will have our outside deck power-washed and windows washed this week in preparation for the celebration.

Now and then, I like to look back and see what the authorities and society got right and wrong with the pandemic. This news broke last night. “The former director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention admits Covid shots caused significant side effects among young, healthy people. He also admitted that the vaccine wasn’t necessary for people under 50. He then admitted that many young and healthy people have suffered significant side effects from mRNA shots. The next time our leaders mandate we do something, we might want to pause and wait for the data. Getting our vax to see a concert might not have been the best play in retrospect. Neither my wife nor I have experienced side effects, but we still have many years for a thumb to grow out of our foreheads. We were Pfizer, so that’s the forehead thumb side effect.

Remember that the puppet master is you; if you are not dancing the way you want, pull a different string. Pull yet another string if you are not advancing in life how you want. No one is pulling your strings; you are doing it yourself, and although some like to blame others for their wonky life, most of us live with the truth of personal responsibility. If you need help, get help; if you can help others, please join us. Life is a participatory sport, and every human has a role, even those with a thumb growing from their forehead.
