Notes

Tangerine Dream's second album of 1975, Ricochet, once more featured two long compositions, each of them filling one side of the vinyl album. Officially it was described as live album, mixed from tapes of their 1975 French and 1975 UK tour. According to Chris Franke, the concerts were much too long to use in one context, so Tangerine Dream had to edit about 40 to 50 hours of music, kilometres of tape, to find the most important parts to be eventually released on their first live album.

Backtracking with Tangerine Dream

Chris Franke: "Ricochet is probably my favourite, because it proved that when we create live music, it is always different. When we create in the studio we pursue particular directions and we experiment, and it becomes more polished, but somehow the live work remains more classic. Ricochet still says something to me."

(Interview with Johnny Black, thisBEAT, issue 17, April 1986)

In fact Ricochet is a for the major part a studio recording except for about ten minutes of Ricochet, Part Two, which were taken from their gig in Croydon with only few overdubs. While the intro of Ricochet, Part One strongly resembles some of the music played in Croydon as well, it was completely recreated in the studio, with additional applause from the Croydon gig to make it appear 'live'. Thus, Ricochet is the first item in a long list of TD albums that were advertised being live but turned out to be (more or less) studio creations -- see Encore (1977), Quichotte (1980), Logos Live (1982), Poland (1984) and Livemiles (1988).

Furthermore, Ricochet is an early instance of Tangerine Dream replaying (or sampling) material of other artists. The metallic hammering sounds starting about the 13 minute mark apparently are a somewhat sped up sample from the composition Va-Et-Vient by French composer André Almuro (1927-2009) from his album Musiques Experimentales (1969).

The photography on the front cover was taken by Monique Froese on the ocean shore at the Dune Of Pilat near Bordeaux; the three photos of the band members on the back side were taken during the french tour mentioned above.

From 30 Years Of Dreaming

In November 1975, a live album was released with the title Ricochet. It was recorded during the tour earlier the same year, in England and possible France. The title is not as cosmic as those on the previous albums: Ricochet is just named after an electronic game the band got obsessed with during these tours!

Ricochet is a very good live recording, but whether or not it is a real live album might be a good question; approximately 40 hours of music were recorded on the tour, so Tangerine Dream spent a lot of time finding the best pieces and putting them together to form a new piece. New material was also added -- as the piano solo at the beginning of Ricochet, Part Two, which was recorded on the piano in the living room at the Manor Studio a few days earlier! Several parts were recorded in a studio -- like the drum part maybe? -- But all in all, the result is rather good and the music on the album is more melodic than the music on the previous albums.

It is also impressive that Tangerine Dream managed to get that much good music from the concerts down on tape at all, since they did not make any substantial use of a frontmixer, but did most of the mixing themselves on stage. To be able to hear what was coming out of the front speakers, it was necessary to turn up the volume and that might not always have been a pleasure to the audience; Tangerine Dream had gained the reputation of being one of the loudest bands around and at one point the sound pressure in front of the P.A. system was measured to be about 120 dB!

Many people consider Ricochet as one of the highlights of Tangerine Dream's early career and I can only agree to that. I think that this album whether live or not captures many of the elements that is the quintessence of Tangerine Dream in this period; driving sequencers, melodic guitar, the mellotron lurking in the background, strange sounds, a cosmic atmosphere and on top of that, simple but very logic melodies or themes given sufficient time to be explored deeply.

Re-Releases

In 1984 the album was released on CD for the first time as part of a series by Virgin. With the exception of Exit, all releases of this series had a similar cover design, using only part of the original artwork in a monochrome border that featured the band and album title.

In 1995 Virgin re-released the album on CD in the so-called "Definitive Edition" series, featuring the original front cover artwork. On previous releases, Ricochet, Part Two had started with a very soft clapping of two hands right a the beginning of the piano part to give the measure for the music. This clapping has been deleted from the "Definitive Edition" CD, perhaps being regarded as a disturbing noise.

In 2009 the album was re-released in Japan with a cardboard sleeve featuring the exact replica of the original LP sleeve.

In 2011 the original album was re-released as part of the compilation box The Virgin Years 1974-1978, and in 2012 it was re-released on vinyl.

In 2019 the album was re-released with two bonus tracks. In fact, this version is identical to disc twelve of the In Search Of Hades box set, featuring the original album, newly remastered by Ben Wiseman from the original tapes, as well as the album remix by Steven Wilson based on the original multi-track tapes. The Japanese re-release of the same year included an additional bonus disc (in fact disc seven of the box set mentioned before), containing (only) the first part of TDs 1974 concert debut in the UK.
