My fishing buddy was out west hunting and a bear came out of nowhere and was on him. He managed to get off a shot with his .300 Mag, but he said it had no effect and didn't even slow it down. He said at first it just knocked him down and gave him a swipe or two and started walking away. He was getting his head cleared and thought everything was over and before he could get up, it pounced on him again. This time it was a little more serious, biting him and tried to make a chew toy out of his head. Luckily it mostly scraped a tooth on his scalp without doing any lasting damage. He was in the hospital for about a week, mainly to treat all the bites and punctures and treating them for infection. Luckily, the bear's intent was to put a scare into him, rather than make a meal out of him. Must of had cubs around. I'm so glad he's O.K. and can't wait to see him in April when about twenty of us get together for the opening of trout season.
He did have some luck in PA with a bow before he left to go out west...
And then his luck went downhill....
Jed Smith lives!
All I can say is ouch!!
This is all the Wyoming game commission had to say about it.

Scary stuff. Headwounds always bleed like mad, so hopefully it wasn't as bad as it looks!
When did this happen?

It happened in October. He finally sent me some pics. He was pretty shaken up by it and really didn't talk about it much until around Christmas time. Luckily, no lasting effects physically have been occurred.

I guess they had to cut into the wounds to make sure they got anything out that would cause infection. He said that part really stunk. (His language was much more descriptive when telling of this.) He surely has a story that few can ever top. He already has a few that stand out to me. One time he and a buddy camped out for awhile and decided to try and make a meal out of a rattlesnake they killed. Didn't turn out so good. The beverages the night before combined with the green slime that leached out from their "meal" caused severe stomach turbulence. Another time, he and another friend were in a war of severe pranks. Roadkilled skunk under a porch. Carp under a front seat. Air let out of tires. Spark plugs stolen. Back and forth they went. It finally ended when my buddy discovered a dead possum zip-tied to his steering wheel after he was gone for a three day weekend in the summer. It bloated up so bad it partially exploded and maggots were all over. He could never get the smell out and had to sell the car! I thought his dad was going to kill him! I only get to see him once in awhile and he always has great stories. I think being a survivor of a Grizzly attack will be his craziest story of all. I'll get to hear it in person at trout camp....

People don't realize how fast it happens....or what it takes to actually stop a bear attack.
When I'm out and about in the woods I carry bear spray as a primary, and as a secondary I carry .44 mag loaded with these.

I used a can of my old lady's pepper spray to rid our campsite of a good sized black bear a few years ago. Apparently, she thought it was a good idea to throw a PB&J in the fire pit the night before... It was wonderful waking up to the shadow of a bear on the tent wall. I dont think I would have tried it against a grizzly though.

He was lucky he got away from it. This is why its good to also have a handgun in bear country. Its hard to get a good shot with a long gun when the bear is on top of you.
