An Ohio doctor who drew national attention when she claimed COVID-19 vaccines made people magnetic is being sued by the federal government. The IRS says she hasn’t paid nearly $650,000 in federal taxes and late fees. The lawsuit filed last month claims Sherri Tenpenny didn’t pay taxes in 2001, 2012 and 2013. Tenpenny, an osteopathic doctor, has been licensed in Ohio since 1984. She told Cleveland.com that she’s tried to settle the tax dispute several times and claims the agency has targeted and harassed her. The lawsuit alleges Tenpenny owes $646,929 overall, most of it late fees and penalties.

Popular soda brand Poppi is facing a class-action lawsuit filed by a consumer who says its products don’t improve gut health as much as their marketing suggests. In a lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Kristin Cobbs said she purchased Poppi drinks on multiple occasions because of their labels, which stated they were prebiotic sodas and featured the slogan, “Be Gut Happy. Be Gut Healthy.” But Cobbs later found that Poppi drinks contain only around 2 grams of prebiotic agave inulin fiber, which she said is insufficient to provide any real benefit. The Associated Press left an email message with Poppi seeking comment.

Louisiana lawmakers gave final approval to a bill that would allow judges the option to order someone to undergo surgical castration when the person is convicted of a sex crime against a child younger than 13. Several states, including Louisiana, currently can order such criminals to receive chemical castration, which uses medications that block testosterone production in order to decrease sex drive. However, surgical castration is a more invasive procedure. The bill approved Monday now heads to the desk of conservative Gov. Jeff Landry. The sponsor of the bill hopes the legislation will serve as a deterrent to such crimes against children.

New York City is not only getting more public toilets, but making them easier to locate using your smartphone. Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday a plan to build 46 new restrooms and renovate 36 existing ones located in city parks, adding to the city’s roughly 1,000 such facilities over the next five years. The Democrat said the city has also developed a new Google Maps layer so people can easily find the locations of every public restroom operated by government agencies and civic institutions.

A U.S. federal court of appeals panel suspended a venture capital firm’s grant program for Black women business owners on Monday, ruling that a conservative group is likely to prevail in its lawsuit claiming that the program is the discriminatory. The ruling against the Fearless Fund is another victory for conservative groups waging a sprawling legal battle against corporate diversity programs that have targeted dozens of companies. The case was brought by the American American Alliance for Equal Rights, a group led by Edward Blum, the activist behind the Supreme Court case that ended affirmative action in college admissions.

San Francisco police have arrested pro-Palestinian demonstrators who occupied a building that houses the Israeli Consulate. It was not immediately clear how many arrests were made Monday but an Associated Press journalist saw police arresting at least a dozen people. A group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators entered the building and occupied it for several hours Monday. The protesters posted signs on the front doors of the building calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war. Photos and videos of the demonstrators posted on social media showed people sitting in a circle and chanting “Free, free Palestine!”

The British D-Day veterans who gathered Monday to kick off events marking the 80th anniversary of the landings in Northern France didn’t need a calendar to remember June 6, 1944. The events of that day remain etched on their minds, unforgettable in their horror, inexplicable in their pain. The mood was somber as about 40 of those who took part in the operation visited Southwick House, on the south coast of England, the Allied headquarters in the lead up to the Battle of Normandy. The event, sponsored by Britain’s Ministry of Defense, came before many of the veterans travel to France for international ceremonies commemorating D-Day.

A long-time NBA assistant, Nori assumed bench duties during the playoffs when Minnesota coach Chris Finch suffered a knee injury and had limited mobility. The social media platform X says it will now formally allow people to show consensual adult content, as long as it is clearly labeled as such. The move makes official a policy already in place when the platform was known as Twitter, before billionaire Elon Musk purchased it in 2022. In a recent update on its website, the San Francisco-based company says users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. It adds that sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression.

A small group of women got down on their knees outside Russia’s defense ministry to hold a rare protest and demand the return of their mobilized soldier husbands and sons from Ukraine. Groups of women who are the relatives of men who were mobilized into the Russian army by President Vladimir Putin have been holding small protests for months. The women behind Monday’s protest asked for a meeting with Russia’s new minister of defense, Andrei Belousov, to demand that the men be allowed to return home and that authorities impose limits on how long soldiers can serve before they can be granted leave.

University of Michigan regent and attorney Jordan Acker called the vandalism “antisemitic” and says Goodman Acker law office staff in Southfield discovered it Monday morning. Splotches of red paint were left on the “Goodman Acker” sign above the building’s doors. “FREE PALESTINE” was spray painted in black upon the building’s walls, while “DIVEST NOW” and “U-M KILLS” — a reference to the University of Michigan — were spray painted in red upon at least one window and a sidewalk. On May 21, police broke up a month-long pro-Palestinian encampment on the school’s Ann Arbor campus.

A company that bred beagles for medical research has agreed to pay a record $35 million as part of a criminal plea admitting it neglected thousands of dogs at its breeding facility in rural Virginia. Prosecutors said Monday that the penalties amount to the largest ever levied in an animal-welfare case. The plea deal also bars Envigo RMS and its Indiana-based parent company, Inotiv, from breeding or selling dogs in the future. The federal investigation of Envigo drew national attention in 2022 when federal authorities conducted a search of the breeding facility in Cumberland County, Virginia. Inotiv issued what it called a “statement of contrition” after Monday's plea deal in federal court in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A memorial for the six victims of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore was vandalized over the weekend. An artist who helped create the memorial arrived Saturday morning to find gaping holes in the painted canvas backdrop he had recently installed. Roberto Marquez told The Baltimore Sun he reported the vandalism to police. A Baltimore police spokesperson said officers responded to the location Saturday evening in response to a call about damaged property. Officials said no suspects have been identified. The vandalized mural is the second backdrop installed by Marquez since the memorial started taking shape. The original was recently moved into storage.

President Joe Biden has called for a quick ceasefire and end to the fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, saying the militant group is no longer capable of launching an attack on Israel like the one on Oct. 7. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and far-right ministers disagree, saying that destroying Hamas will require continued Israeli military operations in the strip. These differing visions of what it looks like to destroy Hamas have raised questions about a new cease-fire effort and threaten to exacerbate already-strained tensions between the close allies.

Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to reject former U.S. Rep. George Santos’ bid to have some of the fraud charges against him dropped as his trial approaches. The New York Republican in court filings last month requested that a judge dismiss three of the 23 charges against him. But prosecutors on Friday dismissed Santos’ arguments as meritless. They say they'll show at trial how he used the identities of his donors to fraudulently and deceptively evade federal campaign finance laws. Santos last year became only the sixth lawmaker in history to be expelled from Congress.

The main opposition party in Slovenia on Monday filed a motion demanding a referendum on the decision to recognize a Palestinian state, which could delay the formal recognition vote in parliament. Slovenia’s government last week endorsed a motion to recognize the Palestinian state and sent the proposal to parliament for a final approval. This was due on Tuesday but parliament will now hold only a debate while the vote will have to be postponed by up to 30 days. The right-wing Slovenian Democratic Party demanded a so-called consultative referendum on the recognition bid, arguing that the citizens should have a say on such an important issue that could have serious consequences for Slovenia.

Elijah Hogan came through a senior year of high school in a homeless shelter to make it to the top of his class. The 19-year-old recently graduated as one of two valedictorians at Walter L. Cohen charter high school in New Orleans. Hogan's mother died when he was 8 and he had lived with his grandmother for several years. He ended up in the Covenant House shelter for homeless youth before his final year of high school. Hogan's graduation ceremony speech applauded his classmates for getting through their trials and hardships. Hogan now plans to attend Xavier University of Louisiana and pursue a major in graphic design.

The Carolina Panthers and the City of Charlotte have proposed a partnership deal that would include an $800 million renovation to Bank of America Stadium and keep the NFL team here for 20 years. The renovation would include a fixed $650 million investment from the city and another $150 million from Panthers owner David Tepper. Tepper has already invested more than $117 million in the stadium prior to June and would also pay another $421 million in potential overages for capital improvements over the term of the deal. The team announced the proposal on Monday. City Council members are expected to meet over the upcoming weeks to discuss it.
