From its unique and realistic take on the Bakumatsu period to its refined approach to combat that favors player reaction and flexibility, Rise of the Ronin might be a tough experience, but Elden Ring fans might appreciate its unforgiving fights. Additionally, it is one of the most story-driven games by Team Ninja, offering a rich narrative involving dozens of memorable historical characters and movie-like cutscenes.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is an ambitious sequel to Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, a 2014 action RPG set in the iconic world of Middle-Earth. With its expanded scope, improved combat system, and impressive dark fantasy environments, Shadow of War offers an unforgettable and epic journey. Moreover, it's further elevated by the Nemesis narrative system, which provides unique interactions with orc chieftains.
While Shadow of War isn't too similar to Elden Ring's approach to exploration or boss fights, this game's dark fantasy setting alone could be enough for some players. Its immersive and twisted story, full of familiar iconic characters, serves as one of the major highlights of the experience.
4 Ashen
One Of The First Open-World Soulslikes
Ashen
- Platform(s)
- PC , PS4 , Switch , Xbox One
- Released
- December 7, 2018
- Developer(s)
- A44 Games

- Action RPG
Ashen is a notable soulslike not only due to its stylized minimalistic graphics but also for being one of the first games in the genre to offer an almost traditional open world, with huge areas full of enemies, secrets, and optional discoveries.
The game is arguably easier than Elden Ring and certainly not as epic, instead offering a somewhat cozy atmosphere with occasional difficulty spikes. However, your journey through Ashen is not as unforgiving because you travel with a constant companion who can draw enemies away from you in combat, making it simpler and more strategic at the same time.

Monster Hunter Rise is perfect for Elden Ring fans who love the challenge of taking down intimidatingly large enemies and bosses. Players don't have to embark on these perilous quests alone, though, as Monster Hunter Rise features stellar co-op features that enhance the game considerably.
Capcom's critically acclaimed action RPG received a fantastic expansion in 2022 titled Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, which enhanced the quality of the game even further with its new hub area, new hunting areas, and, of course, new monsters. Alternatively, players might want to check the earlier released Monster Hunter: World and its huge Iceborne expansion. This game offers so much content it's easy to get lost for weeks and even months.
7 Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Enormous Open World With Several Mythical Realms To Explore
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
- Platform(s)
- Stadia , PC , PS4 , PS5 , Xbox One , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S
- Released
- November 10, 2020
- Developer(s)
- Ubisoft
- Genre(s)
- RPG , Action
Ubisoft has found a winning formula for its open-world releases. Their Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises have both enjoyed continued, consistent success over the years by sharing many of the same design ideas and principles.
Fans of Elden Ring should be cautious going into this game, as Ubisoft's quintessential open-world style involves a lot of hand-holding with waypoints and quest logs constantly guiding the way — far removed from Elden Ring's show-don't-tell approach, which throws players in with little guidance. Still, Assassin's Creed Valhalla deserves a spot on this list, as it's a great game to switch off to and become engrossed in without having to worry too much about what to do or where to go.
The Assassin's Creed series was once firmly an action-adventure franchise, though Assassin's Creed Origins saw the games take a shift in direction to the RPG genre with many similarities to The Witcher 3.
8 Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Stellar Combat System And Unforgiving Difficulty
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
- Platform(s)
- PS4 , PS3 , Xbox One , Xbox 360 , Switch , PC
- Released
- April 23, 2013
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Genre(s)
- Action RPG
$34 at Amazon
Like Elden Ring, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is infamous for its unforgiving difficulty, which can be a deal-breaker for some people but will be a challenge that many Elden Ring fanatics will relish. Dragon's Dogma was first released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in May 2012 before an expanded version of the game, titled Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, was released on the same consoles along with PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch between 2013 and 2019.
Dragon's Dogma's standout features are probably its dynamic, fast-paced combat system, which allows you to climb huge monsters mid-battle to deliver serious blows, as well as the unique followers system known as Pawns. Thanks to this system, players can lead a team of characters with different classes and builds, utilizing many of the game's combat abilities in every fight.
9 Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Fantasy Adventure With Flashy Graphics And Fast-Paced Combat
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was the one and only game developed by 38 Studios before the company filed for bankruptcy. The company's issues aren't reflective of the game's quality, however, as Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a fantastic action RPG that stands out in the crowded genre with its abundance of side quests and customizability.

Diablo 4 differentiates itself from Elden Ring with its isometric perspective, which is uncommon among AAA open-world games. Blizzard's action RPG lets players choose from five different classes (Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer) and gives them a fantastic range of enemies to fight and quests to complete.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Platform(s)
- PS4 , PS5 , Xbox One , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , Switch , PC

- Developer(s)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was developed by CD Projekt Red and was first released in May 2015. Less than two years into the Xbox One and PS4's lifecycle, the game provided one of the most breathtaking, expansive, and meticulously designed games of the entire console generation.
The Witcher 3 ticked a lot of boxes; its standout features, though, were the sheer number of quests available, the depth of story to be found in those quests, and how many significant choices the player could make in them. The game received huge critical acclaim, exemplified by its 93 Metascore on PC and Game of the Year win at The Game Awards 2015.

It has now been well over ten years since The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim first hit stores. A key reason for Skyrim's huge commercial success is how diverse the game is and how many different playstyles there are to choose from. There is plenty to love both for gamers who want a casual experience and those who want a combat-centric, action-heavy one.
13 Horizon Forbidden West
One Of The Most Beautiful Open Worlds To Date
Guerrilla Games, the development team behind Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, must be wondering what they did to deserve such bad luck. Both open-world RPGs were well-received by critics but were followed just days later by two of the most critically acclaimed open-world games of all time — first The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and then Elden Ring.
Horizon Forbidden West certainly won't be overshadowed, however, as the game's stunning open world alone is enough to make it stand out. The game once again sees players take control of Aloy, who is well on her way to becoming one of PlayStation's most iconic characters.
14 Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Realistic And Brutal Experience
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
- Platform(s)
- PS4 , Xbox One , PC , Switch
- Released
- February 13, 2018
- Developer(s)
- Warhorse Studios
- Genre(s)

Kingdom Come: Deliverance was developed by Warhorse Studios and takes players to Bohemia in 1403. The game stands out for its realism, not only regarding its historical accuracy but also for gameplay features like clothes deteriorating and players needing to eat and sleep to stay healthy.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance struggled to impress critics upon release, as a plethora of game-breaking bugs plagued its launch. Thankfully, these bugs and many other technical issues have since been resolved, allowing the game to reach its high potential. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is still rough around the edges, but for those looking to trade Elden Ring's fantasy for historical accuracy, there are few open-world RPGs better suited than Warhorse Studios' game.
15 Dragon Age: Inquisition
An Epic Adventure Well Over 100 Hours
Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Platform(s)
- PS4 , PS3 , Xbox One , Xbox 360 , PC
- Released
- November 18, 2014
- Developer(s)
- BioWare
- Genre(s)
- Action RPG
Dragon Age: Inquisition was developed by RPG experts BioWare, the same studio that worked on the Mass Effect series, Baldur's Gate, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Players take on the role of the Inquisitor, a survivor of a disastrous event that tore a hole in the Veil, the barrier between the physical world and the spirit world of the Fade. Like Elden Ring, players are given a huge, fantastical open world to explore.
2014's Inquisition was seen as a return to form for the Dragon Age series following the disappointment of Dragon Age 2. Along with an 89 Metascore on PS4, Dragon Age: Inquisition won a wide range of awards, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards, NAVGTR Awards, and SXSW Gaming Awards, demonstrating just how strong this title is.
